| Man 7-1 Roma, Fantastic Game From United |
United shows their best performance in Old Trafford to advance to the semi-finals of UEFA Champions League. Michael Carrick, Alan Smith and Wayne Rooney all scored inside the opening 20 minutes before Cristiano Ronaldo added a fourth goal before half-time. Ronaldo and Carrick scored again before the hour, and though Daniele De Rossi denied United a clean sheet, Patrice Evra concluded the rout with a seventh goal in the closing 10 minutes. There have been many memorable performances at Old Trafford down the years but few can compare to the display Sir Alex Ferguson's men put on here. The scuffles between fans outside the ground before kick-off were quickly forgotten once the game got underway, with United looking to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg. Carrick opened the scoring on 11 minutes when he picked up the ball from Ronaldo and bent the ball past a stationary Doni. On 17 minutes the second goal arrived as United swept the length of the pitch as Wes Brown, Rooney, Carrick and Gabriel Heinze combined for Ryan Giggs to slip in Smith, who vindicated his selection ahead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer by steering his shot past an exposed Doni. Rooney got in on the act soon after, timing his run superbly to slot home Giggs' low cross after the Italian side had been completely torn apart down the right flank. Roma's response was for De Rossi to head Pizarro's free-kick just past the upright, but United scented further goals. Ronaldo did make it 4-0 before half-time with a precise finish into the bottom corner after the Roma defence had made the mistake of inviting him to shoot. The second half started with Totti flashing a free-kick wide before United grabbed a fifth after Roma failed to clear a corner after Rooney's initial shot was tipped over by Doni. Ronaldo, slid home a low Giggs' cross for number five before Carrick's piledriver made it 6-0 on the hour mark. Giggs was given a breather for the final half-hour, with his replacement - Solskjaer - lofting a shot onto the roof of the net after Smith had done the same moments earlier. Roma did get one goal back through De Rossi's neat finish on the turn but the game was long since up for the Italian side. The final 20 minutes were passing idly by until United plundered a seventh goal on 81 minutes as Evra started, and finished, a neat move involving Rooney and Solskjaer by dragging a low shot in off the post. Ronaldo foraged forward in injury-time, only to see his low shot saved by Doni before the end. United will take on AC Milan or Bayern Munich in the last four as they look to book their place in this year's final in Athens on 23 May. |
